Difference between Flow Meters and Flow Transmitters
Before we understand the difference between a flow transmitter and a flow meter, let us know their need. Both these devices are used to measure the flow of liquid or gas. Today, in industrial processes, there is a necessity to regulate the flow of fluid or gas. So, the primary purpose of such devices is for process control. Now that we have that cleared up. What is a flow meter and nozzle? Flow meters and nozzles are devices used to measure the flow of liquid or gas as they pass through pipes. It is a piece of engineering equipment that measures, monitors, and record the flow rate, discharge, or pressure of liquid and gasses. There are various types of flow meters – differential pressure flow meters, positive displacement flow meters, open channel flow meters, and electromagnetic flow meter.
What is a flow transmitter? A flow transmitter is similar to the flow meter with the difference that it has electronics inside the pipe to provide electrical output in voltage or current.
Types of Flow Transmitters
Turbine Flow Transmitter
The turbine flow transmitter is an electronic sensor that indicates the flow of liquid as an electric transmission output. There is a broad application of this device for industrial, laboratory flow applications, and commercial.
For industrial use, the turbine flow transmitter is used in oil & gas (water injection, test and production separators, disposal wells, hydraulic fracturing, chemical injection, and natural gas pipelines), Aerospace/Defense (engine testing, fuel flow measurement, shipboard reverse osmosis systems, and monitor fuel supply to ship engines), pharma bio-tech (sanitary measurement, and pill coating), power generation (custody transfer), industrial & municipal (building automation, HVAC, and water metering), cryogenics (liquid measurement of plant applications and trunk deliveries). Water flow transmitter is also a type of the turbine flow transmitter.
Turbine In-line Flow Transmitters
There are mainly three types of turbine – calorimetric, shuttle, and differential pressure. The turbine in-line flow transmitters are sensors that provide electric output to indicate the flow of liquid remotely. Some of the applications of the transmitter are for process control, pump testing, irrigation, drain lines, and chemical batching.
In-line Electromagnetic Transmitters
This is similar to all the above transmitters in its core working; however, the device uses electromagnetic sensors to generate electrical transmission output of the flow rate of the liquid. There are no moving parts in this transmitters, and the accuracy of measurement is lesser than other transmitters. Electromagnetic flow transmitters are for reversible gauging of the volume flow of conductive liquids in closed piping.
Ultrasonic Flow Transmitters
Ultrasonic flow transmitters are sensors that use ultrasound to transmit electrical output to indicate the flow rate of liquid. Usually, these devices are light, compact, and cost-effective. Some of the applications of the device are treated diesel oil, water, river water, utility billing, flow measurement of heating metering, and data logging.
Similarly, to all the above transmitters, the paddlewheel also functions alike with the slight difference that it has paddlewheel in the device. It has a variety of applications from HVAC systems to chemical proportioning and more.
